Each week, we’ll be sharing the latest news on STR regulation from around the country to inform your search for the next best property. Here are this week’s highlights:

As Always, Some Bumps in the Road…

As more people are on the hunt for short-term rentals for quick getaways or “bleisure” (business + leisure) trips, local municipalities are passing new ordinances to regulate short-term rentals. This is mostly so that cities can benefit from the high-growth market through registration fees and occupancy taxes.

  • Pomona, CA limits short-term rentals to 30+ days. By a unanimous vote, a new ordinance was passed in Pomona, CA barring homeowners from renting out their properties on a short-term basis if not owner-occupied.
  • New York State is considering a state-wide registry of short-term rentals. Democratic State Senators introduced a bill last January to create a state-wide registry that would streamline tax collection and regulation. However, it’s a long road to passage, much less enforcement. We’ll let you know if anything changes for this bill.

…But Don't Stress, There’s Plenty of Good News!

Fortunately, in many areas of the U.S., officials are considering reversals of stringent short-term rental ordinances. If this trend continues, it would benefit investors to stay on top of these areas as they may become great opportunities to buy. Let’s see what areas are pushing back on regulation…

  • Arkansas proposes state law to ban STR regulation. Last Thursday, the Arkansas senate approved a bill that would bar local governments from enacting or enforcing an ordinance of any type that prohibits or limits to use of a property as a STR to an occupant.
  • Clark County judge issues injunction to block STR regulation. The Greater Las Vegas Short-Term Rental Association sued Clark County last year for “unconstitutionally vague” and “overbroad” regulations. GLVSTRA Founder and Plaintiff Jacqueline Flores said she hopes officials will “fix the law” and “end the war against Nevada homeowners.”
